Engineer Principal Data Architect & Engineer at Carolinas Investment Consulting

Principal engineer designs and builds enterprise data platforms, architectures, and pipelines at scale while leading technical strategy for AI-driven healthcare products.

Lead Posted about 20 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Our healthcare system is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. Every year, over 50 million Americans suffer adverse financial consequences as a result of seeking care, from lower credit scores to garnished wages. The challenge is only getting worse, as high deductible health plans are the fastest growing plan design in the U.S.

Cedar’s mission is to leverage data science, smart product design and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Today, healthcare providers still engage with its consumers in a “one-size-fits-all” approach; and Cedar is excited to leverage consumer best practices to deliver a superior experience.

Principal Data Architect & Engineer

Why this Job?

Cedar is at a pivotal moment in its technical evolution. We are evolving towards a brand-new, enterprise data platform and model, architected specifically to power the future of Cedar’s product offerings. As the Principal Data Architect, you will be the senior technical authority leading this transition, ensuring our new data foundation is clean, scalable, and cleanly separated from legacy debt.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who loves building production systems at scale and views AI as a massive accelerator for both personal and team productivity.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect the Future-State Data Model & Storage: Lead the design and execution of a new, high-scale data model and storage architecture that lives outside our legacy monolith. You will drive decisions on service boundaries, data ownership, and storage patterns—implementing Medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers) to ensure progressive data quality refinement—while defining the API contracts that will anchor Cedar’s data strategy for years to come. This includes real-time event-driven pipelines and streaming architectures alongside batch analytics.
  • Ensure Metrics Reliability: Own the accuracy and reliability of Cedar’s core business metrics including collection rate, days in AR, and invoice balance tracking. Design validation frameworks that ensure our source of truth remains consistent across all reporting and product surfaces.
  • Power Intelligent Agents: Build the real-time data foundations that power Cedar’s AI-driven products, ensuring agents, like Kora, have the context, entity graphs, and metrics they need to act autonomously in revenue cycle workflows and transform the patient experience.
  • Design for the Future: Design data models for new product lines that expand Cedar’s presence across the full revenue cycle from pre-service through post-service collections.
  • Build Production Code: You are a hands-on builder. You will write, ship, and maintain high-quality production code alongside our team of Data Engineers. You will personally model critical domains and implement the core patterns that the rest of the team will follow.
  • Guide and Mentor Engineers: Act as the technical role model for a team of Data Engineers. You will raise the bar for engineering excellence through rigorous code reviews, design guidance, and technical mentorship, turning every challenge into a growth opportunity for the team.
  • Collaborate: Drive technical alignment across data engineering, platform, and product teams, set priorities, unblock dependencies, and ensure delivery against customer-facing commitments.
  • Steward Data Integrity: Define and enforce standards for Cedar’s enterprise Data Dictionary and metadata strategy. You will partner with engineering and product to ensure data is accurate, discoverable, and synchronized across all environments.

What You Bring

  • Strategic Technical Authority: 10+ years of experience in data engineering and backend systems at scale. You have experience leading large technical projects with a high accountability mentality, focused on delivering value, with a proven track record of shipping production enterprise systems that customers depend on.
  • Modern Stack Mastery: Deep, hands-on proficiency with a wide range of data and engineering technologies and patterns such as Snowflake, dbt, Liquibase, Fivetran, Airflow, OpenMetadata, Kafka, SQL, Python, Kafka, streaming/event driven architectures, CDC (Change Data Capture), and real-time data processing. You have built production-grade ELT/ETL pipelines and managed complex data transformations in cloud-first environments.
  • Metrics & Integrity Focus: Experience building “source of truth” systems and a passion for data accuracy. You understand how to define and audit key business metrics to ensure they remain resilient to system changes. You have experience with data validation and reconciliation, comparing pipeline output against source systems and methodically diagnosing discrepancies.
  • ML/AI Fuel: You have experience building data APIs, context systems, or feature stores that power downstream ML/AI applications.
  • Architectural Judgment: You can spot over-engineering and under-engineering with equal confidence. You know how to design for resilience, modularity, and backwards compatibility. You prefer incremental milestones over big bang deliverables.
  • Clear Communication: You can translate complex technical risks and trade-offs into business-relevant terms for senior stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
  • AI-Native Workflow: You are an avid learner in general, and an adopter of AI engineering tools like Claude Code and Codex. You have experience directing AI agents to generate complete, high-quality solutions and apply your judgment to test and own the output.
  • [highly preferred] Healthcare Domain Expertise: Demonstrable understanding of healthcare concepts, including revenue cycle management (RCM), billing, and insurance adjudication.

Compensation Range and Benefits

  • Salary/Hourly Rate Range*: $246,500 - $311,750
  • This role is equity eligible
  • This role offers a competitive benefits and wellness package

*Subject to location, experience, and education

What do we offer to the ideal candidate?

  • Competitive pay, equity (for qualifying roles), and health benefits, including fertility & adoption assistance, that start on the first of the month following your start date (or on your start date if your start date coincides with the first of the month)
  • Cedar matches 100% of your 401(k) contributions, up to 3% of your annual compensation
  • Access to hands-on mentorship, employee and management coaching, and a team discretionary budget for learning and development resources to help you grow both professionally and personally

Engineer Principal Data Architect & Engineer at Carolinas Investment Consulting

Principal engineer architecting and building Cedar's enterprise data platform, designing scalable data models, ensuring metrics reliability, and powering AI-driven healthcare products.

  • A chance to improve the U.S. healthcare system at a high-growth company! Our leading healthcare financial platform is scaling rapidly, helping millions of patients per year
  • Unless stated otherwise, most roles have flexibility to work from home or in the office, depending on what works best for you
  • For exempt employees: Unlimited PTO for vacation, sick and mental health days–we encourage everyone to take at least 20 days of vacation per year to ensure dedicated time to spend with loved ones, explore, rest and recharge
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave with health benefits for all parents, plus flexible re-entry schedules for returning to work
  • Diversity initiatives that encourage Cedarians to bring their whole selves to work, including three employee resource groups: be@cedar (for BIPOC-identifying Cedarians and their allies), Pridecones (for LGBTQIA+ Cedarians and their allies) and Cedar Women+ (for female-identifying Cedarians)

About us

Cedar was co-founded by Florian Otto and Arel Lidow in 2016 after a negative medical billing experience inspired them to help improve our healthcare system. With a commitment to solving billing and patient experience issues, Cedar has become a leading healthcare technology company fueled by remarkable growth. “Over the past several years, we’ve raised more than $350 million in funding & have the active support of Thrive and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).

We help companies thrive in the new AI-first era of business. Founded in 2005, Box simplifies work for leading global organizations, including JLL, Morgan Stanley, and Nationwide. Box is headquartered in Redwood City, CA, with offices across the United States, Europe, and Asia.

By joining Box, you will have the unique opportunity to continue driving our platform forward. Content powers how we work. It’s the billions of files and information flowing across teams, departments, and key business processes every single day: contracts, invoices, employee records, financials, product specs, marketing assets, and more. Our mission is to bring intelligence to the world of content management and empower our customers to completely transform workflows across their organizations. With the combination of AI and enterprise content, the opportunity has never been greater to transform how the world works together and at Box you will be on the front lines of this massive shift.

We are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.

Why Box needs You

We’re looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join our Core Experience organization, supporting both backend and frontend engineering across our Warsaw and Redwood City sites. This is a high-impact, hands-on senior individual contributor role for someone who wants to design complex systems and see them through to production in a customer-facing domain.

You will help shape the technical direction of a large-scale, customer-facing platform - breaking out of our monolith, modernizing our backend and frontend architectures, and leading the organization toward strong continuous integration and DevOps practices. You will also champion AI adoption across the organization - enabling teams to use AI in their day-to-day engineering operations and building agents that accelerate the software development lifecycle (SDLC). You will ensure that systems are not only well-designed, but built, shipped, and operating reliably at scale.

What You’ll do

  • Build Critical Systems

    • Own the architecture of key backend and frontend systems within Core Experiences.
    • Lead the implementation of high-impact components end-to-end.
    • Ensure systems are scalable, reliable, and observable from day one.
  • Drive Execution at Scale

    • Partner with engineering teams across Warsaw and Redwood City to turn architecture into working systems.
    • Lead delivery of large, cross-team initiatives with measurable business impact.
    • Balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability in real-world tradeoffs.
  • Set Technical Direction

    • Establish patterns, frameworks, and standards that enable teams to move faster.
    • Translate business priorities into clear technical roadmaps.
    • Identify risks early and guide teams toward pragmatic solutions.
  • Enable AI in Engineering

    • Enable teams across Core Experiences to apply AI in their day-to-day engineering operations — coding, code review, testing, debugging, documentation, and incident response.
    • Design and build agents that support the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), from design and implementation through code review, testing, deployment, and operations.
    • Establish best practices, guardrails, and reusable patterns for safe and effective AI usage in engineering workflows.
    • Evaluate and integrate AI tooling (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, internal Box AI capabilities) into the team’s standard development workflow.
    • Measure and continuously improve developer productivity and code quality through AI-driven workflows.
  • Influence & Mentor

    • Collaborate across geographies and functions to align on architecture and execution.
    • Mentor senior and staff engineers in system design, implementation, and effective use of AI in engineering.
    • Contribute to a culture of strong ownership, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Ship Code

    • Be hands-on in prototyping and contributing production-grade code across the stack.

What You’ll tackle in the first 6-12 months

  • Lead the effort to break our backend and frontend out of the monolith into modern, modular, and maintainable architectures.
  • Drive the organization’s adoption of continuous integration and DevOps best practices, raising the bar for build, test, and deployment workflows.
  • Roll out AI-assisted engineering practices across Core Experiences — enabling teams to use AI in their day-to-day work and embedding it into coding, review, and operational workflows.
  • Design and ship agents that support the SDLC (e.g., code generation, automated review, test authoring, release readiness, on-call assistance) and demonstrate measurable productivity gains.
  • Define how we build products going forward — including tooling, workflows, and architectural patterns shared across Warsaw and Redwood City.
  • Set up frameworks for effective cross-site, cross-functional collaboration between backend and frontend engineers.
  • Balance rapid delivery with long-term technical investments to ensure Core Experiences scales with enterprise-grade performance, security, and maintainability.

Who You Are

  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience across backend and frontend.
  • 5+ years leading complex, cross-team technical initiatives.
  • Ability to operate at both high-level architecture and low-level execution.
  • Proven track record of designing and shipping distributed systems at scale.
  • Hands-on experience breaking monoliths into service-oriented or modular architectures.
  • Strong experience driving continuous integration, CD, and DevOps practices across engineering organizations.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) and integrating them into team workflows; experience designing or building LLM-powered agents for engineering use cases is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with modern AI/agent frameworks, prompt engineering, evaluation, and safe deployment of AI in production engineering workflows.
  • Experience aligning cross-functional and cross-site stakeholders around architecture decisions.
  • Pragmatic decision-making: you balance ideal design with real-world constraints.
  • Passionate about mentoring and building a strong engineering culture.
  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid, globally distributed environment; able to travel to the U.S. at least twice a year for team off-sites.

Other information

  • Level positioning: Individual contributor, Director-equivalent
  • Reporting line: Engineering Director, Core Experiences (Warsaw)
  • Role location: Warsaw-based, partnering closely with Redwood City

Engineer DevOps Architect Azure IaC at Emergent Software

DevOps Architect leads cloud infrastructure practice, designs Azure IaC standards, mentors engineers, and advises clients on CI/CD and cloud architecture.

Lead Remote Posted about 20 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Description

**This is an opportunity to join our growing cloud infrastructure practice and shape how Emergent delivers DevOps to our clients. This position is fully remote (indefinitely). **

Emergent Software is looking for a DevOps Architect to lead the technical direction of our DevOps practice within the cloud infrastructure team. A qualified candidate has deep experience with Azure infrastructure, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD, paired with a track record of authoring standards, mentoring engineers from mixed backgrounds, and representing technical practices in client-facing pre-sales conversations. This 100% remote position is for someone who enjoys building the playbook as much as executing on it, and who can move comfortably between writing IaC modules, reviewing a junior engineer’s pull request, and leading an architecture discussion with a client’s CIO.

Highlights & Benefits of working at Emergent Software

  • Work closely with other talented engineers and team members. Our vetting process means you can count on your team members to know what they are talking about.

  • Work from home or work remotely from anywhere you want

  • Flexible work schedule meaning you can work regular hours or choose weekends and evenings

  • Work-life balance is essential and highly valued at Emergent Software. If you choose to work more than 40 hours, you’ll be compensated for the extra work!

  • Shape a growing practice. The demand for our DevOps services is expanding quickly, and this role has direct influence over how the team scales.

  • 100 hours per year to focus on your professional development. We invest in your growth!

  • Grow your career without leaving the tech track. At Emergent Software, you can advance and be recognized as a technical expert without transitioning into people management. We value deep technical expertise as much as leadership and have established clear career paths for those who want to stay hands-on.

  • Profit sharing bonus means as we’re successful, you’re successful

  • Excellent benefits package including medical insurance, dental, vision, 401(k) matching, FSA, disability, life insurance, and paid parental leave

Typical Tech Stack

  • Microsoft Azure (compute, networking, identity, PaaS)

  • Terraform, Bicep, and Ansible for Infrastructure as Code

  • Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions for CI/CD

  • PowerShell, Bash, and Python for automation and tooling

  • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Azure Container Apps (ACA), and Docker where containerization is required

  • Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights for observability

  • Azure Policy, Defender for Cloud, and Entra ID for governance and security

Primary Duties

  • Own the technical direction of Emergent’s DevOps practice, including the IaC standards, pipeline patterns, code review expectations, and reference architectures that the team applies across client engagements.

  • Author and maintain the internal documentation, templates, and modules that the team relies on day to day. This is a core part of the role, not a side task.

  • Mentor a team of engineers from mixed backgrounds, including software developers growing into cloud roles and traditional cloud engineers building DevOps fluency. Pair, review pull requests, run office hours, and raise the technical bar across the group.

  • Lead the most complex DevOps engagements end to end, from discovery through delivery, with a focus on environments where scale, regulatory requirements, or legacy constraints demand strong technical judgment.  This includes grooming backlog work and feature & task assignments to project team as well as influence technical direction across practice areas.

  • Represent the DevOps practice in pre-sales. Partner with sales and account teams to scope work, lead technical discovery sessions, contribute to proposals, and build client confidence in Emergent’s approach.

  • Continuously evolve Emergent’s DevOps practice by evaluating new tools, patterns, and approaches, and bringing the right ones into the team’s standard playbook.

  • Diagnose and improve existing client systems that may be partially implemented or inconsistently managed, balancing pragmatic delivery with long-term maintainability.

  • Accurately track time and work performed to support client billing, project planning, and overall project health, as part of a professional services delivery model.

  • Strong time management skills to be able to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and provide technical support and guidance for other DevOps focused team members.

  • Share your knowledge at regular talk shop and lunch & learn sessions to help build a stronger team.

  • Other related duties as assigned by your manager.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, with deep expertise in Microsoft Azure across compute, storage, and governance

  • Deep networking expertise in Azure, including designing topologies from the ground up (segmentation strategy, hub-and-spoke or virtual WAN, cross-region connectivity, on-premises integration), as well as working fluently with virtual networks, ExpressRoute, VPN Gateways, and private endpoints. Comfortable diagnosing connectivity issues across hybrid environments.

  • Strong identity and security fundamentals, including Entra ID, RBAC, managed identities, and secure access patterns

  • Advanced experience authoring production Infrastructure as Code, including modular Terraform or Bicep with strong opinions on idempotency, reuse, environment parity, and safe change management

  • Proven track record designing and operating CI/CD pipelines at scale using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or comparable tooling

  • Experience designing disaster recovery and high availability strategies in Azure, including defining RTO and RPO targets, multi-region patterns, and failover testing

  • Experience designing for cost efficiency at scale, including tagging strategies, reservation and savings plan planning, and ongoing FinOps practices

  • Demonstrated experience writing and maintaining technical standards and internal documentation that other engineers actively use. Be prepared to share examples.

  • Experience mentoring engineers, including those transitioning into cloud or DevOps from adjacent backgrounds

  • Comfortable leading client-facing technical conversations, including pre-sales discovery and architecture reviews

  • Previous consulting or professional services experience

Nice to Have Experience

  • Experience leading a DevOps or platform engineering practice at a consulting firm, system integrator, or internal platform team

  • Working directly with customer teams of various sizes, from small businesses to enterprise

  • Familiarity with the .NET ecosystem and the deployment patterns associated with it

  • Experience with AKS and Kubernetes in production

  • Experience implementing DevSecOps practices, including secret management, policy as code, and supply chain security

  • Familiarity with Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) and Global Secure Access patterns

  • Familiarity with third-party observability platforms such as Datadog, New Relic, or Grafana, which clients may bring into their environments

  • Relevant Microsoft and industry certifications such as AZ-400, AZ-305, Terraform Associate or Professional, GitHub Actions or Copilot, or Certified Kubernetes Administrator

Engineer LawnStarter: Staff Product Engineer

Staff engineer who leads AI agents to ship product initiatives end-to-end, owning technical decisions and outcomes across architecture, implementation, and production deployment.

Lead Posted 1 day ago We Work Remotely — Programming
What this role involves

Headquarters: FlorianĂłpolis, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil
URL: http://lawnstarter.com

About LawnStarter

LawnStarter is the nation's leading on-demand marketplace for lawn care and outdoor services, with over $100M in annual bookings. We're expanding beyond lawn care to become the one-stop shop for all home services — operating across three brands (LawnStarter, Lawn Love, Home Gnome) on a single shared platform.

About Engineering at LawnStarter

We're restructuring engineering around initiative teams: a Product Engineer paired with a PM and a designer, with an Engineering Manager who covers a couple of initiatives and supports your growth. The engineer leads AI agents like a team, ships the work, and is accountable — with the rest of the triangle — for whether the initiative moves its metric.

We're betting that 1-2 strong engineers running AI agents can outship the labor-team model that defined the last decade of software. That bet only works if the engineers we hire are wired for ownership and can ship to a marketplace with real customers and pros on both sides.

The Role

You're the engineering anchor of one initiative at a time. The initiative is a team effort — an iron triangle of you, your PM, and your designer — and you have key participation across the full lifecycle: shaping the problem, deciding the technical approach, leading the AI agents that implement most of the code, shipping to production, and answering for the outcome alongside the rest of the triangle.

You're accountable for the outcome — not for the volume of code merged. If an agent can ship it safely, your job is to make sure the agent does it right and the metric moves. If the initiative needs hand-written code in a sensitive area, you write it yourself.

What makes this role different:

  • You lead AI agents, not humans. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and our internal agent stack are your team. You own the quality, safety, and velocity of what they produce.
  • You own an outcome, not a ticket queue. Problem-framing through production through the metric review 2-4 weeks after launch.
  • You partner horizontally with PM and design. No tech lead above you. No architect approval. No ticket grooming committee.
  • The bar is staff, not senior. You make the call when the call needs to be made. If you're waiting to be told, this isn't the role.

What You'll Own

  • The technical approach — architecture, data model, integration choices, rollout plan, observability, and rollback strategy for your initiative. You make the call, document it, and revisit it if the data says you were wrong.
  • Agent-led implementation quality — the prompts, guardrails, evals, tests, and review loop that let agents ship safe, correct, production-ready code on your initiative. Most lines will be agent-authored. You're accountable for them.
  • Cross-functional partnership — daily working contact with your PM (scope, tradeoffs) and your designer (UX decisions, in-tool prototyping with agents), and weekly check-ins with your EM (initiative health, blockers, growth).
  • The initiative outcome — the specific metric the initiative was set up to move. In partnership with your PM, you present results 2-4 weeks post-launch and share the "did it work" answer.
  • A high bar for what ships under your name — production correctness, security posture, performance, observability, and the experience for customers and pros. Agents accelerate you; they don't lower the bar.

Problems to Solve

Leading AI agents at staff-level quality
Most of the code on your initiative will be authored by AI agents. The work is making agents ship as if a senior engineer wrote it: prompts that encode our codebase conventions, evals that catch hallucinations before merge, tests that exercise the edges, observability that catches the regression in production before a customer reports it. How do you build the agent workflow that lets one engineer ship what used to take a team?

Owning an outcome without a tech lead
You don't have a tech lead to approve your design or an architect to escalate to. You have an EM who covers a couple of initiatives and peers on adjacent ones. How do you make calls fast, document them clearly, and stay accountable to the outcome — without slowing down for hierarchy that no longer exists?

Shipping outcomes, not features
The initiative will be measured by a metric — a conversion rate, a retention curve, a pro-funnel KPI, a unit economics shift. You're accountable for the number, not the feature. How do you scope to actually move it, decide what to not build, and have the discipline to follow up 2-4 weeks after launch even when the next initiative is calling?

What Success Looks Like (Year 1)

  • Initiative outcomes hit — You've shipped 3-4 initiatives end-to-end, and at least two clearly moved the metric they were set up to move (with the post-launch review to prove it).
  • Agent workflow that travels — The prompts, evals, and review loop you built for your initiative are adopted by at least one other engineer on an adjacent initiative.
  • Cycle time — Median time from problem-framing to first production rollout on your initiatives is meaningfully shorter than the pre-restructure baseline.
  • Zero "agent-shipped that" incidents — No customer- or pro-facing regression traceable to agent-authored code that you missed in review.
  • Visible leverage — Other engineers point to artifacts you left behind — runbooks, evals, agent workflows, post-launch write-ups — as references they use.

Who You Are

AI-native. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or equivalent are how you ship — daily, on production work. You have opinions about prompts, evals, agent loops, MCP servers, and review workflows, and you know when to let the agent run vs. write it yourself. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you describe AI coding as "something you're exploring" or prefer to write everything by hand.

Already operating at lead level. You may currently be titled Senior, Staff, Lead, or Principal — but in practice you've been the person making the call, shipping the hard thing, and answering for whether it worked. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you've always had a tech lead breaking down the work for you.

Outcome-driven, not output-driven. You measure your week in "did the metric move" and "did the experience get better," not in tickets closed. You read the post-launch dashboard and you own the answer. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you take pride in volume of code shipped or feel uncomfortable being measured on a number you don't fully control.

A strong horizontal partner. You hold your own with a strong PM and a strong designer. You bring engineering judgment to product calls and product judgment to engineering calls. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you hide behind "that's product's decision" or default to RICE-scoring tickets handed down to you.

Decisive and documented. Architecture decisions, data-model choices, rollout plans — you write them down, get fast input, and move. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you wait for consensus on questions that have a clear right answer, or if you make calls and never write them down.

Raises the floor, not just the ceiling. Your impact compounds beyond your own initiative because you leave artifacts — agent workflows, evals, runbooks, post-launch reviews. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you're a lone wolf who ships brilliantly but leaves nothing reusable behind.

Cares about customers and pros. This is a real-world marketplace with real people on both sides. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you're chasing pure engineering elegance over business and customer outcomes.

This Role Is NOT

  • A tech lead in an old-style team. No 4-5 engineers reporting up to you on technical direction. The team is you + PM + designer + EM, with AI agents doing most of the implementation.
  • A management role today. People management is the EM's job in this role. That said, the path can grow into management for those who want it — it's an open door, not a closed one.
  • A platform-only or architecture-only role. You're a Product Engineer. You ship features that move metrics, end-to-end. Platform work happens inside the initiative when it's needed for the outcome.
  • A "let AI do everything" role. Agents handle implementation grunt work. You handle judgment, design, safety, and accountability. The bar is higher than the old senior bar, not lower.
  • A research role. This is shipping to a marketplace with $100M+ in bookings. Customers and pros are using what you ship inside the same week.

Tech You'll Touch

  • AI agents — Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, internal agent stack, MCP servers, evals tooling
  • Backend — PHP/Laravel
  • Frontend — TypeScript/React/React Native (customer & pro apps, web and mobile)
  • Data — Redshift, dbt, Segment, Airflow
  • Infra — AWS, Datadog, Sentry, GitHub Actions
  • Documentation & process — Brain (Claude Code skills + docs repo), Confluence, Jira

You don't need every box checked. You need deep skill in at least one of our stacks plus credible production experience with AI coding agents.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary of USD $80,000-$100,000 annual base
  • Work from anywhere
  • High ownership and autonomy
  • Fast-moving team that loves to build, learn, and grow

Engineer Engineering Manager Strategic Projects at Tailscale

Engineering manager leads a senior team building AI-native strategic projects, mentors engineers, drives technical direction on prototypes, and ships customer integrations using LLMs and coding agents.

Lead Remote Posted 1 day ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

About Tailscale

Tailscale is building the new Internet by delivering software that makes it easy to securely interconnect people and their devices, no matter where they are. From hobbyists to multinational corporations, teams of every size use Tailscale each day to protect their networks, share access to internal tools, and more. We’re building a future for the Internet that’s easy, sensible, and safe, like it used to be. Founded in 2019 and fully distributed, we’re backed by Accel, CRV, Insight, Heavybit, and Uncork Capital.

Job Description

We’re seeking a full-time Software Engineering Manager for our Strategic Projects team. Reporting into our co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer, this team exists to show developers and organizations why Tailscale should be their default connectivity substrate, both for internal infrastructure and for embedding into customer-facing products. Aperture, our identity-aware LLM gateway, is one such initiative.

This is an AI-native team. We use coding agents heavily as a force multiplier and expect a manager to be a power user and a coach for others. Our customers demand a high bar on code quality, security, and operational rigour, and we treat that as a reason to use every tool available, including LLMs and coding agents, to ship fast without compromising it.

As Engineering Manager you will mentor a small team of senior engineers; partner with the CSO, PM, and reference customers to turn market signals (particularly around AI infrastructure, agentic tooling, and identity-aware networking) into shippable POCs and reference architectures; provide technical direction on prototypes and integrations, many of which become public artifacts (blog posts, reference repos, conference demos, customer integrations); and help grow the organization through hiring, culture, and process.

Tailscale is fully remote, this team operates with significant ambiguity, and the shipping cadence is fast. Comfort working asynchronously and collaborating with highly technical customers is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a talented, senior team of experienced engineers in a growth-stage startup.
  • Drive business outcomes measured by adoption of new platform primitives, customer integrations landed, and influence on Tailscale’s roadmap.
  • Make major design decisions on prototypes that often graduate into production surface area, and own the quality bar for the team’s externally-visible artifacts (reference architectures, open source, talks, customer integrations).
  • Set the bar for how this team uses AI coding tools: which agents and workflows the team adopts, what review and security practices wrap around agent-generated code, and how the team sustains a fast cadence without lowering the production bar.
  • Hire, nurture, and oversee engineers while fostering a fun, creative, and inclusive atmosphere, including healthy conflict and a culture of candid, kind feedback.
  • Collaborate across core platform engineering, security, and go-to-market on projects that span domains and often involve direct customer co-development.
  • Drive planning across horizons, balancing fast prototype cycles against longer-arc bets on where connectivity, identity, and AI infrastructure are converging.
  • Light travel required (~10-15%): primarily team and company onsites, with occasional conferences or customer visits concentrated in North America with potential trips to EU or APAC.

What We Are Looking For

  • Substantial experience managing and mentoring engineering teams: performance, career development, hiring, and culture
  • Experience developing in Go, the primary language across Tailscale’s stack and this team’s prototypes
  • Heavy daily use of coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) and LLMs in your engineering workflow, with a point of view on where they accelerate work, where they fail, and how to wrap them in review and security practices that hold the production bar. Able to coach engineers on your team to operate the same way
  • Comfort with exploratory, customer-facing engineering: translating customer conversations into prototypes and reference designs
  • Comfort with the cadence of a strategy team at an early-ish startup: priorities shift with market signal, prototype-to-production timelines are short, and the bar on what ships stays high regardless

Nice to Have

  • Building applications on top of LLMs and agentic systems (not just using them as dev tools)
  • Networking background (L4-L7 connectivity, browser and DNS behaviors), and familiarity with Tailscale itself
  • Identity infrastructure background: IdP platforms, identity sync/provisioning, directory services, and protocols (OAuth, OIDC, SAML, SCIM); access control models (RBAC/ABAC), session management, MFA, passwordless auth
  • Leading teams whose output is publicly visible (open source, devrel, reference implementations) and validating prototype code for production alongside security teams

Frequently cited statistics show that people who identify with historically marginalized groups are likely to apply to jobs only if they meet 100% of the qualifications. We encourage you to help us break that statistic!
